Research Aim: This project is centred on South Redcliffe, with a specific focus on the Council Housing estates. The aim is to examine the living conditions, social impact and future prospect of the estates, with a particular emphasis on the 13 multi-storey flat blocks that form the core of the development. These structures, designed to be functional and efficient, stand as an important element of the community, providing affordable housing for families and individuals in need.
We explored how the buildings have shaped the lives of their residents by examining social, economic and architectural aspects that contribute to the ongoing success and challenges of these estates.
Methodology: As a group we accepted the challenge of helping the community. Our main focus was on addressing the needs of four key groups: retirees, students, children and families. Retirees often encounter challenges such as limited accessibility, inadequate infrastructure, and a few opportunities for outdoor engagements. Students require safe spaces for commuting and socialising, especially as they navigate complex social dynamics. Younger children need secure environments, particularly during after school activities in local parks. Families face unique challenges including a shortage of infant friendly activities.
Our work began on the 7th of October with site visits to understand the neighbourhood and user interactions. We engaged with key community members who highlighted gathering points to discuss the neighbourhood; discussion with locals police addressed safety concerns and more insight into community priorities. The key issues we identified within Redcliffe reflect significant challenges impacting the communities wellbeing, accessibility and overall quality of life. Our work therefore is a reflection of how those challenges can be overcome with the implementation of lighting and cctv, improvement of green spaces, and reconstruction of garages to join the community together.
