NEWTOWN LIGHTING pt 1

THE TEAM: Daniel Baker, Chloe Knight, Connor McGarvie, Milly Harvey, Oliver Lowe, and Zebedee Salem-Frith.

Research Aim: How to make the park feel safe for everyone; users & commuters.

Introduction: The physical context of Newtown shows it as an island. Bounded by major roads (A420 and A4320), Trading estates and the Bath cycle path. The park is used all year round as it is on the busy commuter route of the Bath cycle path. Most of the space goes unused other than by dog walkers. This is largely due to the significant rise in ground level and the numerous paths cutting through the open space. These paths create eight routes in and out of the park making it ideal for quick getaways.

The issues first introduced to our team concerned safety and lighting. Other residents and park users pointed out the frustrating lack of bins and poor seating.

Methodology: The approach of this project was to achieve ‘small wins’, outline ‘big plans’ and raise the morale and visibility of the park, its users and nearby residents. Our proposal begins with raising the tree canopy to combat anti-social behaviour, littering and loitering. As well as proposing updating park furniture such as benches and bins. These proposals all improve the space's quality, bettering the perception of the park and increasing safety for park users.

Alongside these proposals, the team set up a light festival. The festival aims to allow continuity of past and future Live Projects, with the shared aim of raising awareness of the park, its challenges and successes through a fun, engaging and creative activity.
