Introduction: The Al Baseera Centre, located in Bristol's St. Jude’s neighbourhood, serves as a vital hub for the city’s Somali Muslim community. As one of Bristol's most frequented mosques, it functions not only as a place of worship but also as a centre for cultural activities, youth education, and community events, particularly during Islamic festivals.

The current 2.5-storey building houses prayer halls on the ground and first floors, with classrooms and essential facilities on the second floor. However, the mosque's popularity has exceeded its capacity, prompting a need for redevelopment or relocation.

Methodology: Situated within Bristol City Council’s Frome Gateway regeneration area, the mosque is part of a wider plan to transform St. Jude’s with new homes, public spaces, and green corridors. Recognising Al Baseera’s cultural significance, the council is working to ensure its role as a cornerstone of the community continues amid these urban changes.

In February 2023, a planning application (ref: 23/00843/F) was submitted for a two-storey extension, extending the building line along Little George Street. While this proposal adds space, concerns remain within the community about its adequacy in addressing long-term needs.

Our project explores alternative redevelopment strategies to maximise the mosque's current site. These designs consider both feasibility and potential council restrictions. Proposals include expanded prayer halls, youth facilities, and the introduction of new spaces for shops, a kitchen, and funeral services.

This initiative aims to ensure the Al Baseera Centre not only meets the needs of its growing community but also contributes to the evolving urban landscape of St. Jude’s, preserving its status as a cultural and spiritual beacon.
