THE TEAM: Tom Harker, Michelle Benalcazar Murillo, Tasnia Ahmed, Isuri Ratnayake, Khizer Mohammed, Oliver Allen, Elaeth James, Ollie Beale, Martina Rodriguez

Research Aim: For this project we aim to help improve the overall experience of the visitors to the Abuko Park Nature Reserve in The Gambia.
The Nature Reserve is currently it is under-funded and has fallen into disrepair.

The Client: Abuko National Park

The Facilitators:
Daughters of Africa NGO

Our Collaborators: We have collaborated with UWE BA(Hons) Graphics Design Students to improve signage, and Gambia’s Technical University (USET) for a ‘live-build’.

Deliverables: We have created a series of thirty signs pointing to every location on the park and have given these to the rangers to put up where they feel appropriate, alongside this we have repainted the welcome sign and other information boards at the entrance.

And the construction of a Bird Hide! As we were working on a tight budget, we decided on a block half wall with a timber frame and metal roof as advised by the USET students and the Rangers. They provided so much valuable local knowledge about which materials are best to use, and the traditional ways of constructing structures like this.

All of these efforts are in the aims of improving the end user experience and by doing that hopefully generate more income for the park to use to further renovate and repair its structures.
