Introduction - Livable Neighborhoods or healthy Neighborhoods, are an approach to managing public space and traffic within a community to promote walking and cycling as a priority over vehicular travel. This, in turn, creates more resilient physical connections for key hubs of the community, nu creating outside spaces for community activity, safe and accessible passage for all and more resilient environmental and ecological systems.

Purpose - The purpose of this project is to perform a critical analysis of BS3 to create a speculative livable neighbourhoods scheme for the area, with the intention of creating a better connected healthier and more resilient community.

Who Is it For - Working on behalf of Ben Barker, a key and active member of a range of groups and initiatives within the BS3 community, this project will primarily look to communicate engage and promote the benefits of a livable neighbourhood for BS3 t members of the community?

Our Vision - The Proposals look to develop a series of nodes along North Street, the proposals give a vision of North street that priorities active travel providing a more useful, cleaner, healthier, and accessible street environment, beneficial to everyone in BS3.

A Double lane priority system was added in the areas that need it the most. These areas are semi pedestrianized. The street layout is divided into zones on each proposal. Zones that attract people to sit, visit, shop and socialize. These zones have disability-friendly seating areas and are divided into public and semi-private space by strategically placing planters. Each of these spaces is demarcated by an individual paved threshold. Green is added to increase biodiversity and is key for making the area attractive for the community.

There is a single lane, priority vehicle access that will reduce the speed and amount of traffic and also levels of pollution. In turn, this encourages walkers and cyclists. The Schemes allow for a dedicated cycle lane. There are two closely space pedestrian crossing to slow down traffic and giving pedestrians priority and freedom to move between zones. Above the spaces are suspended lights to create a warm inviting night-time environment encouraging people into the area at night with the intention that business owners can diversify their activities to meet this new demand.

Each of the proposals along North Street all hold a different personality and have been designed carefully based on the surrounding area.
