Research Aim: To create a research document consolidating past proposals, and current needs of the community focusing on strategic way-finding, increasing green infrastructure, and creating a safe community for the residence of the HCCA.

The Client: Hotwells Cliftonwood Community Association (HCCA), Anna Wilson, Sibusiso Tshabalala

Who is it for?
: Hotwells is an area in Bristol located at the end of Spike Island, just below Cliftonwood that acts as a main gateway for people travelling out of town as the come into Bristol’s City Centre. In 1950, the council built multiple flyovers to ease traFic into the city and unfortunately left the local area without a sense of community and belonging. It is now heavily trafficked with speeding cars by the gateway, little community infrastructure, and an unsafe place for pedestrians or cyclists to go through.

Our group collaborated with a large number of community groups within the HCCA, successfully collecting inclusive data to foster a sense of community back to Hotwells. We did a total of 7 engagements with: the local councillor, the Hotwells Corner Campaign, Art Under the Flyover, Trinity Lunch Club, and Hotwells Primary School. All of these engagements sparked design principles in which we have incorporated within our proposals. The gateway has been designed with intentional landscaping, way-finding, and traFic calming strategies. The Cumberland Piazza, an open space under the flyover has also been further developed with collaging activities we did at Hotwells Primary School.

We presented short, medium, and long term strategies in which the HCCA can then implement with community activities or apply for further funding.

The final part of our project is a petition to reopen a closed park behind Hillsborough Flats, just by Hotwell Road. The park has been closed for almost a decade due to the equipment being deemed unsafe. We have made petition posters with Year 5 students at Hotwells Primary School to get support and funding to reopen the park.
